The REAL Official Press Release for the upcoming King of the Hammers!

Half desert race, half Rock crawling event coming Feb 21st and 22nd.

Johnson Valley California, Will be home to the first of its kind Rock sports marathon, in the canyons that some argue gave birth to the rock crawling industry over ten years ago.

Hammerking Productions Inc., Crawl Magazine, WEROCK events Inc, RaceDezert.com, Totally Off-road radio, Dirtnewz.com and Pirate 4x4.com are teaming up to present a completely new form of off-road racing, called King of the Hammers. The 50 mile course will combine the technical aspects of rock crawling with the attrition of desert racing. The made for media event will be broadcast live on multiple web sites including RDC, with TORR doing play by play both Thursday and Friday.

The course will feature all the aspects of open desert racing, but will add in the slower crawling sections that will require experience and equipment well versed in climbing big ledges, and traversing insane obstacles. King of the Hammers pits the top teams in Rock sports from the WEROCK series, and XRRA, against hard core trail runners, desert racers, a CORR driver and even an extreme skier. Using part of the Lucerne race course as well as a dozen of the famous Hammer trails in Johnson Valley the invite only drivers will have to balance the needs of rock crawling with the ability to drive fast. The expected finishing time for the winning team will be about 4 hours with a cut off time of 10 hours.

After 10 years, Rock-sports now have its premier event, with many drivers building cars specifically for this race. Coverage starts Thursday feb 21st with a media day in which drivers, sponsors, and race staff will discuss the race, and strategy for survival. The race starts Friday morning Feb 22nd with TORR play by play, and a host of other web based media.
Due to the difficult terrain Hammerking Productions has partnered with multiple media outlets to bring the action to your computer screen live. King of the Hammers is not a spectator event in so far as allowing a onsite contingency of spectators. Drivers will spent the majority of the course time in narrow canyons with little access to chase teams. Each team will have to carry the majority of spare parts and equipment.

Crawl Magazine will do an extensive feature post race and dedicate the cover to the winner of King of the hammers, in addition to print Media Spike TV’s Extreme 4x4 TV will feature the race on an up coming episode.

HammerKing productions Inc, has been joined by a number of great companies to bring this next level of rock sports to the public.

Scrutineering and administrative checks will take place on 19th of April in Budapest.

Nearly half of the total distance, 3000kms, will be run in special stages. The opening of entries is planned on 11th of February. A.S.O has already received the support of all the major teams. BMW, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Schlesser and KTM have already shown a great interest for this new event, image of the development that A.S.O. wishes to bring to the sport.

The Central Europe Rally will be the first event to be run under the “Dakar Series” certification. This certification will be given to other races that offer the same high organisation and safety standards, strong participation and media attention as the legendary Dakar. The “Dakar Series”, which was planned to start in 2009, is a project that A.S.O. has been working on for a long time. It will begin one year ahead of schedule. This first Central Europe Rally is a milestone of a series of new events intended to expand besides the Dakar Rally. The 2009 Dakar edition will be announced in the weeks to come.

(*) Due to terrorist threats, the 2008 Dakar edition was cancelled. Unfortunately last Friday a new terrorist attack happened again in Nouakchott (Mauritania)

Robby Gordon on Dakar Cancellation!

Breaking News, Dakar Rally cancelled over security fears!

LISBON (AFP) - This year's Dakar Rally has been cancelled over security concerns, in particular direct "terrorist" threats to the race, organisers announced on Friday.

The race had been due to start in Lisbon on Saturday but the murder of four French tourists in Mauritania on December 24 led to the French government advising against any travel to the country.

Nine of the rally's stages were due to pass through Mauritania en route for Dakar and the scheduled finish on January 20.

"Following several consultations with the French government - in particular the ministry of foreign affairs - and taking into account its firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally scheduled for January 5-20 between Lisbon and the Senegalese capital," the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) said in a statement.

The ASO said there had been "direct threats against the race issued by terrorist groups."

It was the first time in its 30-year history that the controversial race has failed to go ahead and will cast doubts over future editions.

Cabo San Lucas (Mexico) – “I can’t believe we finished” screamed a very excited and surprised Pete Sohren at the finish line of the 40th anniversary of the SCORE Baja 1000 in Cabo San Lucas Mexico. “Pistol” Pete and a team of less than 10 people including 1 navigator, a couple of co-riders, 3 chase teams and 1 co-driver got the #2 Schampa/Maxxis Trophy Truck off the starting line in Ensenada to the finish line 1,296.39 miles later in Cabo San Lucas. It was an amazing finish. “We nursed a broken third member for 100 miles” Pete said about his troubled rear end axle on the Gieser built Trophy Truck. This was Pete’s best finish in his history of racing the SCORE Baja 1000. At the finish line the team celebrated with “Pistol” Pete spraying champagne at cheering fans. His sponsor Andy Meyers- owner of Schampa clothing looked on smiling and said “you guys made it, congratulations!” The team took 4th place in the Trophy Truck division for this historic race. The next race for the #2 Schampa/Maxxis Trophy Truck will be in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in Laughlin, Nevada in January of 2008.
